If you take a look at the statistics, February definitely lives up to its reputation: In Waldsassen in Bavaria, the temperature fell to -36.3 degrees Celsius on February 10, 1956, an absolute record value. On February 12, 1929 in Munich, the German Weather Service (DWD) based in Offenbach also registered a chilly -31.6 degrees Celsius. Both years were the two coldest since temperature measurements began, with an average temperature of -10 degrees.

But the weather in February in Germany has also been affected by global warming in recent years. In the coldest month of the year, 20 degrees Celsius are no longer uncommon. A total of around 15 percent of all weather stations have already reached 20 degrees and more in the course of February.
According to the DWD, February has always been too warm in the past three years: in 2021 the average temperature was +1.8 degrees (+1.4 degrees above the climate mean), in 2020 it was +4.9 degrees (+4.5 degrees) and in 2019 at +4 degrees (+3.6 degrees). The last time it was too cold was February 2018: the average temperature was -1.9 degrees and thus -2.3 degrees below the climate mean.

But what will the weather be like in February 2022 in Germany? Will the month follow a too mild December and January, or will the cold snap still come? In any case, the current forecasts will disappoint many a winter fan. At the moment, there is little to say that it is freezing cold and snowfall is widespread. In their long-term forecast, the European and American weather services predict that February 2022 will be too mild. Accordingly, the temperature should be one to two degrees above the climate mean.
When it comes to precipitation, both models assume that the month will be average and even too dry in some regions.
