40 dead – Heavy rains in Sri Lanka and India

Drowned in the flooded area, struck by rubble or electrocuted: the days of heavy rain cost many people their lives.

Colombo / New Delhi – At least 40 people have died in connection with heavy rain in Sri Lanka and nearby southern India.

They died in the past few days, among other things, because they were struck by rubble from collapsing houses, drowned in the flooded area or were electrocuted, officials said on Friday.

So far, Sri Lanka has been more affected by the storm, but the storm has now moved more towards the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India. India Today reported that the water in reservoirs was high and that there could be further flooding. dpa
