In future there will only be two corona categories for countries. Which regions will be classified as “high risk area” or “virus variant area” as of today.
Berlin – From August 1, 2021, all unvaccinated people aged 12 and over who enter Germany are required to have a test. In addition, the classification of countries is being revised due to the local corona situation. While the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) and the Federal Foreign Office previously divided the particularly affected countries into the three categories of “risk area”, “high incidence area” and “virus variant area”, there will only be two categories from August 1, 2021: “high risk area” and ” Virus variant area “.
But even if the lowest category “risk area” is omitted, this does not mean “that there is no longer a relevant increased risk of infection when staying in these areas”, warns the RKI on its website. “There is currently a risk of infection worldwide.”
Corona pandemic worldwide: which countries will be considered high-risk areas in the future
The RKI will add the following countries and regions to the list of high-risk areas from August 1st (midnight):
- Andorra (previously risk area)
- Botswana (previously virus variant area)
- Eswatini (previously virus variant area)
- Lesotho (previously virus variant area)
- Malawi (previously virus variant area)
- Mozambique (previously virus variant area)
- Namibia (previously virus variant area)
- Zambia (previously virus variant area)
- Zimbabwe (previously virus variant area)
- South Africa (previously virus variant area)
The list also includes the regions that were previously considered to be high-incidence areas. For countries such as the popular holiday destination Turkey, the classification as a risk area will no longer apply from August 1, 2021.
There are no new virus variant areas as of August 1, 2021, there are still only two countries on the list: Brazil (virus variant area since January 19, 2021) and Uruguay (virus variant area since June 6, 2021).
Corona in the world: high risk areas and virus variant areas
Areas with a particularly high number of cases are to be identified as high-risk areas in the future – an indication is a regular 7-day incidence of well over 100, according to the RKI. Virus variant areas will in future be areas in which a certain variant of the coronavirus, which is not yet widespread in Germany, occurs “with worrying properties”. (tab)
