Corona pandemic: wrong numbers for first vaccinations? RKI confirms discrepancy

The numbers of corona first vaccinations in Germany are not exact. The RKI provides information about discrepancies between different survey systems.

Kassel – There is a “certain uncertainty” in the interpretation of the vaccination data. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) informed about this on Tuesday (August 10th, 2021). In a report on the previous Corona * vaccinations and vaccination readiness, the RKI wrote that the data in the digital vaccination rate monitoring (DIM) on Covid-19 vaccinations would probably be underestimated.

The discrepancies exist mainly in the vaccination dates of young adults and middle-aged adults. In this category, more people could have received a first vaccination than officially recorded.

The RKI collects reports on corona vaccinations from the following offices:

  • Vaccination centers
  • Hospitals
  • Mobile vaccination teams
  • Occupational physician
  • Resident doctors
  • Private doctors

Data on Corona first vaccinations in Germany at Covimo “a lot higher”

These corona vaccination data are fed into the DIM, summarized in the so-called vaccination dashboard and made available to the public. In addition, the RKI publishes another survey: the Covid-19 vaccination rate monitoring in Germany (Covimo). While the DIM obtains the data from official reports, the vaccination rates in the Covimo survey are extrapolated on the basis of surveys. The last data collected by Covimo covers the period from June 28, 2021 to July 13, 2021. Around 1000 adults were interviewed during this period. There was a clear discrepancy to the DIM.

“A lot higher” – that was the rate of those vaccinated at least once. This was particularly evident in the 18- to 59-year-old age group. When asked, 79 percent said they were vaccinated. In the reporting system, however, it was only 59 percent. In this context, those responsible at the RKI wrote that the actual vaccination rate is likely to be between the values of both sources. “There was no significant difference”, however, “in relation to the vaccination rates for completely vaccinated people”, according to the survey. In addition, a certain amount of underreporting in such monitoring systems can be expected by experts.

Volker Bouffier, the Prime Minister of Hesse, spoke before the federal-state summit that the vaccination quota had to be increased, since only this would offer “sufficient protection against infection”. According to the decision of the Corona summit on Tuesday (August 10th, 2021), there will be changes, especially for those who have not been vaccinated.

According to the current number of Corona cases in Germany on Wednesday (August 11th, 2021), the RKI has counted 3,799,425 detected infections with Sars-Cov-2 since the beginning of the pandemic recordings. 62.5 percent of people in Germany are considered to have been vaccinated once. 55.1 percent received a full vaccination.

In the Covimo report, the RKI writes about the willingness to vaccinate Corona in Germany: “The population’s willingness to vaccinate Covid 19 is at a high level.” According to this, 91.6 percent of those surveyed are either already vaccinated or ready to be vaccinated. Official RKI data show how well a corona vaccination protects against severe courses.

Corona vaccinations in Germany: discrepancy in data between DIM and Covimo

How the discrepancies between the DIM and Covimo data come about has not been conclusively clarified. But there are different explanations. One aspect could be the recording of the corona vaccinations with Johnson & Johnson, since you only need one vaccination for complete vaccination protection. The problem could therefore result from the fact that, for example, contract doctors only report this immunization as second vaccination doses. Furthermore, an association between vaccine and age group is currently not possible.

In addition, only about half of the company doctors registered with the reporting system reported vaccinations via the web application. “This could be an indication of an under-recording of the vaccination rates by DIM”, it said in the RKI report.

Discrepancy in the corona vaccination data: RKI specialists are looking for an explanation

According to the RKI, other influencing factors could also be the potential distortions in the survey. This could lead to an overestimation of the quota. For example, it can be assumed that people who advocate corona vaccinations are more likely to participate than objectors. Even people without sufficient knowledge of German would not have been able to take part in the interviews. For both aspects, however, the authors point out that there should have been a greater difference between the sources for those who were completely vaccinated.

After the publication of the Covimo report, a note on the discrepancies that might arise was added to the DIM data. The population is now being informed that the vaccination rates for adults who have been vaccinated at least once are “systematically reported too low” by age group.
