A new heat record has fallen in Europe. But how long does it last? The extreme summer is stepping up again.
Offenbach – A new heat record has been set in Europe. A weather station reported a whopping 48.8 degrees Celsius * on Wednesday (11.08.2021) in Sicily. But is this record really valid? And how long would it last? Because the mega heat has the weather * in Europe under control.
The previous heat record is in Greece and was measured back in 1977. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has yet to confirm the new record. Although the station measures according to WMO guidelines, it apparently belongs to an operator from the private sector. According to an initial assessment by graduate meteorologist Dominik Jung, the weather station in Syracuse looks serious: “It is not surrounded by high vegetation, is fenced in and measures all parameters at the prescribed height.”

However, from tomorrow there will be new opportunities to reach these high temperatures again. The Iberian Peninsula expects record extreme heat from Friday to Monday. The weather models * calculate with point forecasts of 46 and 47 degrees. With these calculated values, you can always add 1 to 2 degrees at the end, because in reality it gets even hotter, ”explains Jung, managing director of the weather service Q.met to the weather portal wetter.net.

The next heat record could soon fall when it comes to the weather in Europe. But apart from records, the current temperatures are life-threatening and a great danger to health. “For the people there, this heat is simply life-threatening. Heat of death would be the right word here. We are approaching the 50 degree mark. In the sun this is already 55 to 60 degrees. Even in the interior of Mallorca, temperatures of up to 40 degrees are likely to be reached. This heat is just extreme, ”emphasizes Jung.
Weather in Germany: 35 degrees at the weekend – so it goes on
An enormous cloud of Saharan dust * could bring some cooling. It has spread across the western Mediterranean and will also reach Germany on Friday (August 13th, 2021). The temperatures climb up to 35 degrees Celsius, but don’t stay there for long. “Apparently we are lucky and we are spared all the great extreme heat.
