Endless downpours – and suddenly a tidal wave: It is unclear what the masses of water in the Höllentalklamm not far from the Zugspitze have done. The anxious question: have people been carried away?
Grainau – Heavy rain has triggered a tidal wave in the Höllentalklamm in the Zugspitz massif near Grainau.
“We do not yet know whether people have been harmed,” said the press spokesman for the police headquarters in Upper Bavaria South, Stefan Sonntag. Eyewitnesses reported that people could have gotten into the water. Apparently a bridge was torn away by the floods. According to the observers, there were hikers on this bridge.
100 helpers on duty
The measures would now be coordinated at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen police station. In addition to several patrol vehicles from the region, a police helicopter had also been requested. Around 100 helpers are in action, it said.
A year ago severe storms made the path through the Höllentalklamm impassable. A good 60 hikers got stuck at the Höllentalangerhütte and were ultimately flown out by helicopter. dpa
