Great joy in the Leipzig Zoo: a few days ago an as yet nameless orangutan baby saw the light of day.
Leipzig – An orangutan girl was born in the Leipzig Zoo. It is still nameless and already the second child of the 17-year-old mother Raja, said zoo director Jörg Junhold on Wednesday.
"So far, Raja has been very caring for her young animal, who already drinks regularly." The girl was born on August 21st. Father is the group head Bimbo. The 40-year-old ape had already fathered several children in Leipzig, it was said.
Orangutans are reportedly threatened with extinction in the wild. According to WWF, they only live on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Forest fires, palm oil plantations and poaching are affecting the population. dpa
