“School ship Germany” as a new tourist attraction

Relocation on the Weser: Two tugs brought the three-seater “Schulschiff Deutschland” from Bremen-Vegesack to Bremerhaven, where it was once launched. Many people watched from the land.

Bremerhaven – Bremerhaven has one more tourist attraction: the three-masted “School Ship Germany” has been in the New Harbor since Thursday in the immediate vicinity of the German Emigration Center and the Climate House.

In June, Bremerhaven's Lord Mayor Melf Grantz (SPD) and the chairman of the German Training Ship Association, Claus Jäger, agreed that the maritime memorial would come to Bremerhaven permanently.

The former sailing training ship has been in Bremen-Vegesack for the past 25 years. On Thursday it was brought to its new berth by two tugs accompanied by smaller boats. Several ships greeted the tall ship from Bremerhaven on the Weser, and many onlookers watched the spectacle from land.

The ship was launched in Bremerhaven in 1927. For decades it was used for nautical training. It can now be booked and viewed for private celebrations, weddings and overnight stays. dpa
