The series does not end, London’s mayor speaks of an “epidemic”: Once again, a young woman has apparently been murdered on the way home in the British metropolis.
London – Half a year after the murder of the Londoner Sarah Everard, the killing of a young woman shakes the British capital again.
The 28-year-old was probably killed on the short walk between her apartment and a pub where the teacher wanted to meet a friend, the London police said on Thursday. The young woman disappeared last Friday evening, and her body was found on Saturday afternoon in a park between the apartment and the pub. The police called on the population to report possible evidence and observations.
Her path “should have taken a little more than five minutes, but she never got there,” said chief investigator Joe Garrity. “We know that the neighborhood is rightly shocked by this murder – as are we – and we are using all available resources to find the perpetrator.” Interior Minister Priti Patel tweeted that she was listening to the case on a daily basis Keep me up to date. The government had been criticized for not doing enough against violence against women and girls.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan spoke of an “epidemic”. Within a year, 180 women were killed by men across the country, he said.
The problem has come into greater focus in the UK since the murder of Sarah Everard. The 33-year-old disappeared on the way home from a friend in March. Her body was only found days later in a wooded area in the southeastern English county of Kent. A London police officer has come to court for kidnapping Everard in the street and then raping and killing him. The verdict against him is expected in the coming week. dpa
