Erectile dysfunction after corona infection – Covid-19 damages "vessels in the penis"

Erectile dysfunction can be the result of a corona infection: Two researchers explain.

Münster – An infection with the coronavirus can lead to erectile dysfunction, which is permanent. The background to this is that Sars-Cov-2 attacks the endothelial cell layer that surrounds blood vessels.

The research assumes that “the coronavirus damages the fragile vessels in the penis so that the endothelium no longer functions and the erection no longer works.” Michael Zitzmann, chief andrologist at the University Clinic in Münster, told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung .

Corona: erectile dysfunction after infection – have testosterone value tested

In addition to damaging the cells in the penis, the focus is also on cells in the testes: so-called Leydig cells can be attacked by coronaviruses, so that they ultimately produce less testosterone. However, corona infections * can by far not only lead to erectile dysfunction, but also increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Anyone who experiences erectile dysfunction as a result of a corona infection should therefore have the testosterone value checked. In consultation with a doctor, it is recommended that you use drugs such as Viagra.

According to Christian Wülfing, urologist, a corona infection is only a supporting factor in an already existing development. For example, existing high blood pressure promotes erectile dysfunction, as the doctor of the FAZ said.

The extent to which an infection with Sars-CoV-2 leads to erectile dysfunction and impotence has not yet been conclusively researched. The Leydig cells are also a scientific approach, as they produce testosterone. In addition, there are so-called Sertoli cells: According to the report, they play an important role in the nutrition of sperm. There is also a receptor on these cells to which coronaviruses can dock. Regardless of a possible infestation, however, it is not yet clear how this will affect. Christoph Spinner, infection box at the Rechts der Isar Clinic in Munich, also gave his opinion on this *.

Covid-19: No connection between corona vaccination and erectile dysfunction

However, the connection has already been examined more closely: The Chinese PLA Hospital in Beijing evaluated a total of 28 studies. The evaluation was published in the journal Jama Network. This was based on the semen from a total of 860 men. According to the evaluation, those with a severe course of Covid-19 showed poorer semen quality than those with a milder course. What is missing as an aspect in the studies, however, is the semen quality before the respective corona infection.

In the past, there were also reports about a connection between a corona vaccination and erectile dysfunction or impotence. So far, however, there is little evidence of this. Urologist Wülfing therefore emphasized according to the FAZ: “The benefit of the vaccination definitely outweighs the risk of any side effects.” (Tu) * hna.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA.
