Formula 1: Nico Hülkenberg becomes a substitute driver at Aston Martin

Sebastian Vettel gets German company with the Formula 1 racing team Aston Martin. This season, Nico Hülkenberg will be the reserve driver for the team that was called Racing Point until last year. In addition, Hülkenberg could fill a similar role at some events for the world champion racing team Mercedes.

Hülkenberg confirmed this on Friday in the run-up to the Bahrain Grand Prix (Sunday, 5 p.m.) on ServusTV . The 33-year-old is an expert in front of the camera for the Austrians this year.

At Mercedes, Hülkenberg could act as a replacement if the actual reserve drivers of the team, Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck de Vries, are active in Formula E. According to the current status, there will be overlaps between Formula 1 and the electric racing series during the Grands Prix in Barcelona (May 9th), Monaco (May 23rd) and Baku (June 6th).

Hülkenberg had lost his regular place at Renault in Formula 1 at the end of 2019. At Racing Point, however, he jumped three times in 2020 because Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll were absent due to corona diseases. For the Racing Point predecessor Force India, Hülkenberg sat in the cockpit in 2012 and from 2014 to 2016.
