Breast milk is a living liquid that adapts to the baby’s needs at all times. As we have also seen on other occasions, milk is not always white, but can change color; We can see it more yellowish, whitish, more bluish or greenish, as in this case that we show you.
A 23-year-old Mexican mother, named Anna Cortez, shared in the Facebook breastfeeding group Milky Mama a photograph with two bags of milk showing how the color of her expressed milk had changed when she was sick with Covid .

Then he shared the photo that we can see above with three bags: before, during and after the Covid.
It all happened in January, when her baby was also infected.
“My baby got sick about 2 days before me. We decided not to test her and just treat her as if she had Covid, as I tested positive (based on her pediatrician’s recommendation and under her care). I expressed breast milk – and I only express my milk once in a while to build up a reserve – but when I got sick my baby wasn’t getting enough so I had to pump more milk to increase my supply.
Four days after testing positive, she began to express milk. He says that at that time he did not pay attention to its greenish-yellow color. He just bagged it and placed it in the freezer. As it froze, the milk darkened.
“Returning a few days later, I saw that the color of the milk that I expressed while positive was green . I continued to pump during the time I was ill and the milk gradually returned to its regular creamy white color.”
The mother explains that her diet did not change, something that can influence the change in milk color at times. And she said that when she consulted with her little girl’s pediatrician, she told her that the color change could be due to natural antibodies that fight infections and protect the baby .
“I spoke with my daughter’s pediatrician, who is also a lactation consultant, and she said that it is common that when the mother gets sick, or when the baby gets sick with a cold or stomach virus, the breast milk changes and becomes adapt with antibodies. The reason it was so noticeable in this case is because the virus is very strong, “he said.
After its publication, several mothers shared that they, too, had noticed a color change in their milk while they had coronavirus and even after getting vaccinated against the disease.

“Similar after vaccination for me:”
Continue breastfeeding
Anna says that the pediatrician advised her not to stop breastfeeding after testing positive.
“She told me as soon as I tested positive to continue breastfeeding my daughter , that it was the best for her because it would give her everything she needs and if she is sick, breast milk will fight it. Your body knows what it is doing and if it is changing. something in your milk is because that’s what your body needs, “he added.
They are the same recommendations that the main medical societies give. The WHO recommends continuing breastfeeding, even when the mother is positive for Covid, maintaining safety measures, since the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh the risk of contagion in babies. Especially now that it has been proven that, like other infections, Covid antibodies are transferred into breast milk to protect the baby.
