Temperatures in Germany could soar in the coming week. The temperature difference is up to 40 degrees compared to the previous year.
Kassel – February is officially a winter month, but there could be a change in the weather in Germany as early as next week. The temperatures could then rise significantly, according to the forecast by meteorologist Dominik Jung from the weather service Q.met.
“The jet stream is to blame for the current winter debacle,” explains Jung. The jet stream is a band of strong winds around the northern hemisphere. “This is currently making a dent over Central Europe to the north. A west to south-west current can therefore continue to prevail.” The polar vortex is therefore firmly attached to the North Pole and does not bring any cold air masses to Europe.
Weather in Germany: Spring-like temperatures up to 15 degrees in February
Due to the jet stream, the winter in Germany has so far been far too warm. January 2022 alone was almost 3.3 degrees warmer than the long-term average. In February it will be even warmer. “Next week, double-digit maximum values are possible in almost all of Germany,” predicts Jung. The temperatures can even climb up to 15 degrees. An “incredible warmth for February”, which, according to Jung, will stay with us until the middle of the month.

Weather in Germany: In March it gets even warmer than in February
The temperatures that are predicted for the coming week are actually not until mid or late March. According to Jung, the weather is way ahead of its time. However, it is uncertain whether spring has already established itself permanently. After a warm February, however, forecasts are only pointing to a very warm March, according to Jung. In March there could then be temperatures of around 20 degrees or higher. For Jung, the prognosis is a “record heat”.

However, another onset of winter in March is theoretically possible. “The probability of a March winter is currently low, although not entirely impossible,” said Jung. (Sarah Neumeyer)
