Corona in Germany: number of deaths remains high – federal states start with Novavax vaccinations

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported almost 175,000 new corona infections on Saturday (02/26/2022). The nationwide seven-day incidence continues to fall.

Update from Saturday, February 26th, 2022, 2:50 p.m .: The corona vaccine from the manufacturer Novavax was delivered to the federal states on Friday (February 25th, 2022) or could be picked up by them. This was announced by the Federal Ministry of Health. The first delivery should contain 1.4 million vaccine doses.

In Schleswig-Holstein, the vaccine distribution with the new vaccine will start on Saturday (February 26th, 2022). According to the Ministry of Health, vaccinations with Novavax should be possible in Kiel, Lübeck, Neumünster, Itzehoe and Prisdorf – even without registration, as reported by ndr.de. In Hamburg you can also have the new corona vaccine administered with immediate effect. According to the authorities, about 33,000 cans are available. Appointments can be booked online. However, no prior registration is required for city vaccination campaigns. The Novavax vaccine is also to be distributed in other federal states in the coming weeks.

Novavax is a protein vaccine and thus differs from corona vaccines previously approved in the EU. At the end of December 2021, the European Commission granted approval in the EU. He hopes to convince people who have not yet been vaccinated against the corona virus.

Corona case numbers in Germany: Incidence is gradually falling

First report from Saturday, February 26th, 2022: Berlin – The nationwide seven-day incidence of new corona infections has fallen again. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the value of new infections per 100,000 people and week on Saturday morning as 1253.3.

For comparison: the day before the value was 1259.5. A week ago, the nationwide incidence was 1350.4 (previous month: 940.6). The health authorities in Germany reported 175,833 new corona infections to the RKI within one day. This is evident from numbers that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 5 a.m. A week ago there were 189,105 infections. The total number of registered cases of infection in Germany since the beginning of the corona pandemic has thus increased to 14,574,845.

Experts assume a high number of cases that are not recorded in the RKI data. One reason is the limited capacity of health authorities, for example, and contacts are often only tracked to a limited extent. In addition, according to the ALM laboratory association, there is now a larger number of people whose infection is no longer confirmed by a PCR test – these infections are therefore not included in the official statistics.

In addition, according to the RKI, 250 new deaths related to the corona virus were recorded within 24 hours. The total number of recorded corona deaths in Germany rose to 122,621. The RKI put the number of people who have recovered from corona disease in Germany at around 10,758,500 since the beginning of the pandemic.

In November, the federal and state governments had defined the so-called hospitalization incidence as the decisive benchmark for tightening or relaxing the corona measures. This value indicates how many people per 100,000 people are in the hospital within seven days because of a corona infection. According to the current RKI information, the hospitalization incidence on Friday was 6.28 nationwide. A week earlier it had been 6.24. (red/dpa/afp)
