With the support of celebrities: Europe Day should become more popular

It could also be a public holiday, but hardly anyone knows it: Europe Day May 9th. An association now wants to raise awareness for him with celebrities and companies.

Berlin (dpa) – Celebrities like Iris Berben, Linda Zervakis, Klaas Heufer-Umlauf and Ulrich Matthes as well as institutions and companies want to establish a new ritual for May 9th with the greeting “Happy Europe Day”.

The Berlin-based association announced that the slogan should be present in as many places as possible. Europe Day should become more popular in this way, according to the initiative.

For example, on May 7th and 8th, the European greeting will be printed on all Rewe receipts, Deutsche Bahn will let the Europe Day wish run on thousands of displays, and Berlin Central Station will also be illuminated with it. In addition, there is a stadium gang at 1. FC Köln on Sunday with the slogan that the Post Tower in Bonn will be illuminated with it.

The board of the non-partisan association “Tu was für Europa”, which is behind the action, includes Franziska Brantner, the parliamentary manager of the Greens in the Bundestag, and the former President of the European Parliament and former SPD leader Martin Schulz. The patron is Minister of State for Culture Monika Grütters (CDU), chairman of the advisory board of FDP politicians Alexander Graf Lambsdorff.

Actress Iris Berben (70) can be quoted with the words: “Because the values of Europe are a bulwark against extremism: Happy Europe Day!” And Ulrich Matthes, who will be 62 years old on May 9th and is President of the German Film Academy, says: “So that Brexit doesn’t catch on: Happy Europe Day!”

Europe Day commemorates the Schuman Declaration of May 9, 1950. At that time, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman gave a speech in Paris about his vision of a new political cooperation in Europe that would prevent wars between states. Schuman’s proposal is seen as laying the foundation stone for the European Union.
