What is a twilight animal?

There are four main types of animal activity patterns: nocturnal, diurnal, catemeral (their activity patterns do not adjust to a certain time of day; they are both nocturnal and diurnal), and twilight .

Most of us are familiar with two of the terms for periods of activity in plants and animals: nocturnal and diurnal. Nocturnal animals, like bats, are active at night and diurnal animals, like humans, are active during the day. We have already seen that the cathedrals move between one and the other and, finally, there are the twilight.

Twilight, a word taken from the Latin word for “twilight”,is a term that defines animals that are active mainly at sunrise and sunset. There’s a very clever reason for choosing to be active during these dim lights of the day: twilight creatures avoid predators. Many predators are most active in the peak hours of light and darkness, so animals such as rabbits that are a kind of prey for countless carnivores, are active during the twilight hours when the predators are already tired from one night hunting, or are just waking up. In addition, it is difficult to see during these hours, a fact that gives prey species an additional advantage to hide or escape from predators.

In warm areas, there is another reason for animal twilight activity: it allows animals to be active when the temperature is most reasonable. Desert animals can thus escape the midday heat and midnight cold by being active at dawn and dusk. Ysome species can go from being nocturnal or diurnal to being twilight due to environmental factors such as competition with other species. For example, some species of owls can be crepuscular to avoid rivalry with other species of raptors, or the disturbance of human activity.

The domestic cat is a great example of a twilight animal, but so are deer, some species of bats, bears, foxes, bobcats, and many, many more species. Many moths, beetles, flies, and other insects are also crepuscular.

This anti-predatory adaptation also occurs in some of the familiar mammalian species including dogs, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, and rats. Other twilight mammals include prosimians, red pandas, chinchillas, skunks, wombats, quoles or satanelles, spotted hyenas, bobcats, tenrecs, capybaras, and the extinct Tasmanian tiger. Twilight birds include the common nightjar, snipe, or pintoja chick.

Some species have different habits in the absence of predators. For example, the short-eared owl is twilight on the Galapagos islands that have vulture species, but diurnal on islands that do not have this bird of prey.

About cathedral animals

Perhaps this particular habit catches our attention. And, as we have seen, there are some animals that are not always either diurnal or nocturnal. And how is it that there are animals that are sometimes active during the day and other times they are active at night?

The activity of the catemeral animals changes throughout the year . Sometimes they are active during the day and other times they change and are active at night. These animals can change their activity patterns for a variety of reasons, such as access to food, temperature, and minimizing the risk of predation.

Unfortunately, it is not always easy and clear to define that an animal is always nocturnal, diurnal or catemeral. Animals that are cathedral: some species of cats such as wildcats and pumas. Others would be the, frogs, coyotes and mountain goats.
