Why is San Francisco the gay capital of the world?

It seems that everything began to take shape in World War II, when the military authorities sent soldiers suspected of homosexuality to the city to be tried by the court that would decide their future in the army. Between 1941 and 1945, about 10,000 suspected gays and lesbians came to San Francisco, and many stayed to live.

However, it was not until the 70s when the Californian metropolis was erected as a world reference in the claim of the rights of homosexuals. In that decade, activist Harvey Milk was elected as a councilor, played in the 2008 film by Sean Penn, who was assassinated by politician Dan White on November 27, 1978.

Today, San Francisco's LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community is concentrated in the Castro district. The nerve center of this neighborhood is the confluence of Castro Street with 18th Street , a place known as “the four most gay corners of the Earth”.
