Although no sport is bad, when we practice intense physical exercise without being prepared, the consequences for our health can be negative. And, in that sense, some sports are more ‘dangerous’ than others. Thetriathlon, speed skating, cycling, rowing and boxingare some of the sports practices with the highest cardiovascular risk, according to the Spanish Heart Foundation.
An article published in the magazineJournal of the American College of Cardiology, classifies sports into three grades based on the oxygen consumption they require and the contraction of force carried out during the activity. “The sports with the highest cardiovascular risk are those that, during training and, above all, during competition, require more than 70% of the individual’s maximum oxygen consumption”, explains Araceli Boraita, from the Center for Sports Medicine (Spain) . Activities likegolf, billiards, bowling or olympic shootingThey have a lower risk of cardiovascular accident, since they depend more on the technique used than on physical effort.
Experts warn of the danger of subjecting our body to a very intense effort when we are not used to it. “All sports are good, it is not that there is a bad sport,” says Boraita. “The beneficial effects or the risk depend on the volume and intensity at which one practices them.” In the same way, it is not recommended that a person who has done a lot of sports for a long period of timeI stopped practicing abruptly. “The body has balanced the sympathetic and parasympathetic tone of the nervous system during those years of exercise,” says the specialist. “However, if an athlete suddenly stops exercising, the balance is out of balance and these people can suffer from arrhythmias.”
