What future awaits the Milky Way?

Three new studies released in the Astrophysical Journal suggest that the Milky Way and its neighboring Andromeda will merge into a gigantic new elliptical galaxy four billion years from now . A third galaxy, the Triangle Galaxy or object Messier M33, which accompanies Andromeda, could also join this merger.

It is a theory that has been in use for a long time, since both galaxies are attracted by their force of gravity. However, until now it was not known for sure if they would collide with each other or just slide very close. Using very precise data obtained with the Hubble space telescope , NASA astronomers have confirmed that the frontal collision will be a fact. In addition, the authors of the study point out that from that moment on, the appearance of the sky will change forever and, incidentally, the history of our Sun and its system of planets, since thousands of stars will be propelled into orbits very different from the current ones . Specifically, the simulations carried out show that the solar system will move and occupy a position much further away from the galactic heart.
