What is flatus that appears when running?

Doctors call ittransient abdominal pain (TAD) associated with physical exercise, although colloquially it is known asflato. Those who suffer describe it as a “sharp, stabbing pain localized to the abdominal area, generally lateral, associated with the performance of repetitive movements of the torso ?. Its causes are unknown at the moment. One of the possible explanations that experts consider is that the excessive stiffness and hypertonia that some athletes could present in the muscles that stabilize the spine would generate acute pain under the diaphragm. Others attribute it to not enough blood (and therefore not enough oxygen) reaching the diaphragm, the main respiratory muscle, leading to muscle fatigue.

What all the experts seem to agree on, according to an article recently published in the Andalusian Journal of Sports Medicine, is thatthe intake of liquids or solids before or during sports practice influences these episodes. Recent studies indicate thathypertonic drinkswith high concentrations of sugars are those that, with greater probability, can cause flatus, because they make the stomach emptying much slower. Experts recommend avoiding any type of intake 1 or 2 hours before practicing physical exercise and avoiding drinks rich in carbohydrates, such as juices.

Regarding the sports where flatus occurs most frequently, a recent study revealed thatswimming was the sport in which there were more episodes (75%), followed by running (69%), horse riding (62%), aerobic practices (52%), basketball (47%) and cycling (32%).
