According to a study carried out a few years ago by the University of Illinois (USA), the day that most people die from lightning in the United States is July 4, coinciding with the celebration of Independence Day. In fact, in general, summer is the season of the year in which more deaths occur worldwide due to this meteorological phenomenon. Scientists attribute this to our spending more time doing outdoor activities.
Mary Ann Cooper, a professor of emergency medicine at the University of Illinois, says that the best measure to avoid this is to take cover immediately when you hear thunder , whether in a building, in a car, on a bus or in a truck, but never under a tree. Cooper also recommends staying away from corded landlines, computers, television screens, and video games . And while the storm lasts, it is advisable not to wash your hands, take a shower or wash the dishes , in addition to staying away from the windows.
