During sleep the lymphatic circulation slows down, causing a certain accumulation of fluid in the spongy tissues of the lower eyelid , where the skin is five to ten times thinner than other areas of the body. This accumulation and a slight retention of tear fluid cause the eyelids to swell.
In general, the phenomenon disappears immediately, since when we get up and stand upright, the lymphatic circulation is quickly restored.
