Most computer programs or applications allow you to interrupt or cancel an action using the Esc key, better known as Escape . Coinciding with the boom in consumer computing in the 1960s , Robert William Bemer, an IBM engineer , invented this key that, when pressed, stops, for example, the loading of a program.
Bemer, however, is best known for other contributions to the world of computing. In 1959, he participated in the development of the COBOL language and in the 1960s he created the ASCII code. This engineer was also the first to warn about the consequences of effect 2000, but no one took him seriously.
