American and Japanese meteorologists have used a sensor from the TRMM satellite to make the first reliable map of the electrical activity of storms on a planetary scale. Just look at the stormy map (right) to see that lightning is conspicuous by its absence in the polar regions -white spots-. The same occurs in some areas of the Pacific , where the electrical phenomenon is almost unknown . In contrast, Florida, the Himalayas, and central Africa are the areas most prone to lightning strikes – black spots. Finally, the TRMM images show that thunderstorms like the land more than the sea . "90 percent of lightning strikes the continents," says Hug Christian, a scientist who participated in the study.
