A team of researchers from the Complutense University has just presented the conclusions of a study that seems to confirm the negative impact of excessive exposure to digital screens , at least in rats. The experiment consisted of surrounding the cages of a group of laboratory animals with six tablets with white LED light that were lit for 16 hours a day , while the rest received the same luminosity from the devices with an external filter that absorbed wavelengths. short , highly energetic radiation capable of damaging the eyes and other parts of the body.
After spending three months in this way, the scientists examined the retina of the animals that had received unfiltered light and discovered negative changes in its structure: both the outer nuclear layer of the light-sensitive cells and the expression of genes had decreased. linked to the prevention of apoptosis cell death, a kind of programmed 'suicide' . In addition, the genes that favor such cell death were more activated.
On the other hand, the retinas of the mice protected with the filter (manufactured by the Reticare company) did not suffer cellular deterioration , while the genetic changes were partially or totally reversed.
Another work presented by the same researchers, and carried out with people of different ages, warns that children receive three times more short-wave light than adults when they look at the same device , since they place their eyes at shorter distances.
