Sex and money are represented as positive things in our lives; We always say that the more the merrier, but is that really the case? According to the latest study carried out by the University of Toronto-Mississauga (Canada), neither sex nor money have unlimited benefits for well-being, but the former brings us more happiness than the latter .
The research looked at three different studies with surveys of more than 30,000 people over more than 40 years. First, they examined responses to the questionnaire conducted by the University of Chicago on sexual frequency and overall happiness level of 11,285 men and 14,225 women between 1989 and 2012; a questionnaire that was repeated every 2 years until the end of the study.
According to the work, having sex once a week on average represented the magic number of happiness . Increasing the sexual frequency did not increase the level of happiness of the participants.
“Although sex more frequently is associated with greater happiness, this link was not significant at a frequency of more than once a week. Our findings suggest that it is important to maintain an intimate relationship with your partner, but without the need to have sex every day, ”explains Amy Muise, the study leader.
The second study under analysis was based on a survey of 2,400 married couples and the questionnaire was repeated every 2 years for 14 years. The evaluation of the responses showed again that the couples were more satisfied with their relationships with only one sexual practice per week; less contributed to unhappiness / stress and more did not contribute to more happiness.
In the third study, the researchers conducted an online survey about their annual income with 138 men and 197 women with a stable partner and whose sexual relations were once a week on average. After reviewing the results, they discovered that there was a big difference in happiness levels between those with an income of $ 15,000-25,000 a year compared to those who earned $ 50,000-75,000 per year and the happiness statistics regarding sexual frequency . That is, the results showed that sex was more strongly linked to happiness than money.
“People often think that the more money and more sex, the more happiness, but this is only true up to a point,” says Muise.
The study has been published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science.
