Under the slogan ” Five keys to hydration ” the general council of official pharmacist colleges has launched a campaign to make citizens aware of the importance of hydration in the summer season. The action is focused on the entire population, but especially on the most vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, pregnant women, children and people who play sports.
The tips collected are the following:
1. It is not necessary to be thirsty for liquids, because although thirst is a signal that warns us that we must already drink liquids, it is better to anticipate it.
2. Consume between 2 and 2.5 liters of liquids daily. These liquids can be consumed through food or drinks, being of special importance to maintain adequate hydration in meals.
3. Heat and dry environment as well as other special circumstances can promote dehydration . In case of having symptoms such as thirst, dry mucous membranes and skin or a decrease in the amount of urine, drinks that reestablish the body’s water balance should be consumed.
4. In case of practicing any physical activity, even in a moderate way, hydration is essential before, during and after its practice, since the exercise produces the elimination of water and mineral salts. It is not advisable to exercise in the central hours of the day during the summer season.
5. Diets can vary specific water requirements and therefore hydration needs. However, it is important to maintain a routine pattern of fluid intake throughout the day, with special attention in times of heat and physical activity.
