Cannabis abuse can cause psychosis and lead to schizophrenia

The psychomimetic effects of cannabis are not comparable to those of synthetic drugs such as LSD, but they can induce a temporary psychotic break that, if you have a history of mental illness, poses a significant health risk. In this sense, a new research has revealed that the abusive use of cannabis can produce alterations of the nervous system comparable to psychosis and schizophrenia , being especially vulnerable those who are prone to said disorders or those who have not reached the full maturation of their nervous system , that is, children.

According to current scientific knowledge, the main cause of schizophrenia is dysfunction of a glutamate receptor , NMDAR, which involves increased dopamine levels characteristic of psychotic effects. The NMDAR receptor must remain excited in its proper measure, being able to perform its function, linked to learning and memory, but without compromising cellular function.

The present investigation, carried out by researchers from the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), has determined that the abuse of cannabis and its active compound, THC, disproportionately increases the weight of inhibition on the NMDAR system, which unbalances This delicate balance can lead to psychosis and even lasting damage to the nervous system, in the case of individuals predisposed by genetic inheritance .

However, given the therapeutic possibilities of cannabis, researchers are looking for a way to alleviate this influence linked to schizophrenia and preserve its beneficial effects .
