Heart health has become a priority for everyone. Despite the fact that there are many factors that can cause heart problems such as being sedentary, being obese or smoking, now a team of researchers from the University Hospital of Toulouse (France) has added marijuana as an element of risk for our heart .
To do this, they followed up on all the cases registered between 2006 and 2010 in the French Addiction Surveillance Network, the body that quantifies and assesses drug-related health problems. Examining the data, it was deduced that 2% of them had a direct link between marijuana and cardiovascular problems (mainly heart attacks).
” Cannabis can trigger cardiovascular problems and should be seen as such by health specialists and users, who often admit the dangers of drugs such as cocaine and amphetamines, but minimize those of cannabis,” says Émilie Jouanjus, leader of the research.
The study, which has been published in the Journal of the American Heart Association , shows that this percentage is probably higher than that obtained, since many of the cases are not reported and therefore do not appear in the registries, but the The trend of this problem is on the rise and its severity as well. Not surprisingly, of the 1,979 cases analyzed, 25% of them ended with death .
“The mechanism by which marijuana affects the heart is not clear, but its use has already been associated with the risk of heart attack or sudden death,” says Jouanjus.
