What is and how to use a mobile hotspot?

A mobile access point can become a quick, simple and easy solution to create, to be able to amplify the Internet connection of our mobile device, especially if we need to extend it to other devices, as for example it could be the case of a laptop or a digital tablet that does not have this type of connectivity.

What’s more, it is a truly simple functionality, which we can generate, create and use with great ease just by following a few steps through our smart mobile phone (both Android and iPhone).

What is an access point? And a mobile hotspot?

An access point is a device that creates a wireless local area network, or WLAN, usually in a home, office, or in a much larger building. In this way, the access point connects to a wired router via an Ethernet cable, and sends a WiFi signal to a specific or dedicated area.

If, for example, we want to activate WiFi in our living room, but we do not have an extra or additional router at hand, it is possible to install an access point nearby with the help of an Ethernet cable.

However, a mobile access point consists of the configuration of a wireless access point (or WiFi), using our smart mobile phone, which offers the possibility that one or more users (such as computers, smartphones, tablets or any other device with wireless connectivity), you can easily connect to access the Internet through the device’s EDGE, 3G + or 4G connectivity.

Therefore, the main difference that we find between a traditional access point and a mobile access point is that mobile or wireless access points tend to be protected , since freely sharing a mobile data plan with any user would end up becoming extremely expensive, and also very quickly.

However, it is also necessary to take into account that some access points may offer the possibility that any user near the coverage area can use their own login information, and pay for their own data.

Thus, some mobile phones can carry out this function by creating an ad-hoc WiFi network , through a process known technically under the name of tethering , which can also be done using a laptop or digital tablets that have integrated mobile data connections. .

How to use a mobile hotspot

Once created, using a mobile access point is actually very simple and straightforward, also offering us many advantages, since it can be useful when we want to share the Internet connection of our phone with the computer, digital tablet or, in short, with any other person.

Furthermore, it is possible that we are away from home, there is a WiFi network available, but we are not entirely sure that this Internet connection, even when we have access to it because it is public, is one hundred percent secure.

What to do in this case? Very simple: if we use our smartphone as an access point, it will allow us to enjoy Internet connectivity to, for example, use our laptop, thereby avoiding originally unsafe WiFi networks.

What’s more, family car trips (especially when we have young children at home) can be even more fun when we use our phone’s access point to connect a digital tablet to the Internet.
