What the Cloud and AI can do for your business

Last July Google, specifically its Cloud division, brought together a group of specialized journalists to tell their strengths in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and the cloud, or the Cloud. Isaac Hernández, director of Google Cloud, was in charge of reviewing the achievements of his Company in this field, and even of telling some examples of projects in which they are having palpable success.

Hernández says that Google has been doing the Cloud for 20 years, and that it has Data Centers and its own hardware to be able to market services to customers. ” In 10 years everything will be Cloud, ” he says. “ And it will generate a trillion dollar business. We will open one Data Center per month in the next few years. And in the last seven we have already invested 30,000 million dollars in Data Centers and infrastructures around the world ”.

The Google manager explains that his company is also an example in terms of energy savings in its Data Centers, which consume 50% less than similar ones from other companies. “ We do, consuming less, 3.5 times more Computing than five years ago with half the energy. And we have done it by applying artificial intelligence. We have sensorized the Data Centers to optimize energy consumption using AI. Google is the largest renewable energy consumer in the world ”.

More than 4 million companies worldwide use Google products, says Isaac Hernández. And he cites some of them, such as Cabify, which works with Google’s Cloud technology. Also Twitter, which has 300 Petabytes or 300,000 Terabytes of information in the Google cloud. Google also has clients such as Airbus, which began working with Google’s AI to distinguish between snow and clouds on the move. According to Isaac, Airbus has improved its predictions by 70% and significantly lowered its errors.

In Spain, one of the prominent clients of Google Cloud is Repsol . With them, the American company has started a project in which it uses artificial intelligence and cloud computing to optimize the crude refining process in its Tarragona refinery, filling the refinery with sensors and obtaining data and behavior patterns to take decisions that allow cost savings and energy efficiencies. According to Isaac Hernández, “ Repsol saves 30 cents in the production of each barrel of oil, which represents many millions of euros in total ”.

Another relevant project in which Google Cloud is working with a Spanish company is Talgo a la Meca. A train has around 6,000 sensors, which generate 2,000 signals every second. The amount of information that a train generates each day is about two gigabytes. And all this information is stored in the Google cloud. Everything around the train is sensorized to reduce, for example, the time trains are in workshops, with the aim of reducing maintenance costs while maintaining quality and safety rates.

Talgo itself states that “ we want to simulate what formula 1 does to fix the trains in the shortest possible time and get them back on the track. And for this we use machine learning or automatic learning to compare and manage all the information to be able to predict and be efficient in the intervention times of the trains in the workshops. We estimate the maintenance cost reduction forecast at 15% ”.

The meeting concluded with a promise from Google, which announced that they will bring their smart home assistant, Google Home, to businesses. For this reason, they are already working with Evo Bank on a pilot initiative that will offer results at some point.
