Martin Freeman harshly criticizes the performance of the Method

In the history of acting there have been many schools and ways of bringing characters to life. One of the most famous is The Method, created by Russian actor and theater director Konstantin Stanislavski. This acting system changed the interpretation system creating a whole generation of actors in the Actors Studio founded by Elia Kazan at the end of the 40s. The method bases its principles on that the interpreter must incorporate his own experience into his character, feeling it as real to the extreme of physical mimicry. Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Daniel Day Lewis or Al Pacino have been just some of the great names who have offered this technique to achieve the glory of interpretation. Martin Freeman, as a good English actor, has referred to the Method pejoratively for all that it entails outside of filming. In an interview for the Off Menu podcast, Martin Freeman criticized the interpretation system as “pretentious” and that he and his British colleagues prefer to “go ahead and do it” because it is a very impractical way of working, so the actor believes that it belongs more to the student and academic side than to the skill that is practiced in real settings. “It is a great headache when someone loses himself, it is a huge pain because it is no longer a trade or a job.” Freeman wanted to give the concrete example of Jim Carrey in Man on the Moon, when he played the comedian Andy Kaufman , pointing out all the negatives and disadvantages of the approach. Connotations that can be seen in the documentary Jim and Andy in which all the problems of Carrey’s constant performance are reflected, which ended up affecting the recording set and the actor himself.”For me, and I’m really sure that Jim Carrey is a charming and intelligent person, but it was the most self-aggrandizing, selfish and narcissistic shit I have ever seen,” criticized the Hobbit actor about the performance of the protagonist of Mano on the Moon and, added his perplexity with the social support that these attitudes have: “The idea that anything in our culture celebrates or supports it is literally unhinged.”
