Along the Congo River are the Inga Falls, the largest on the planet if volume is taken into account (a flow of around 25,768 cubic meters per second). However, to find the highest waterfall in the world in landmass we will have to move to the American continent: the Angel Falls, southeast of Venezuela, is 979 meters high and 150 meters wide. But, for width, that of the Khone falls, which have a distance of 10 kilometers from side to side. To visit them in person, you will have to travel, again, to another continent, since they are located on the Mekong River, in the extreme south of Laos, on the border with Cambodia. It is necessary to avoid the rainy season, because with the monsoons the river floods and the waterfall disappears completely.
As we have already said, the highest waterfalls in emerged lands are in Venezuela but, really, the highest waterfall in the world triples the Angel Falls and has a height of 3.51 kilometers. It is found under the ocean, specifically in the Danish Strait (Faroe Bank Channel), which separates Iceland from Greenland.
As for the names, terms such as waterfall, cataract, fall and jump are often used interchangeably. There is no fixed rule to define when a waterfall is considered a waterfall, although the latter term is often used when we talk about very large waterfalls or those that carry a large volume of water, like many of those that we will show in this gallery.
These striking geographical features are formed by the erosive action of water on rocks when there is a gap in the course of a river. Its origin, on other occasions, is due to the action of glaciers, earthquakes or volcanoes.
