Although there is confusion in the use of the terms, the word Scandinavia usually refers to a geographical and cultural region in which the Scandinavian languages are spoken, that is: Norway, Sweden (which form the Scandinavian peninsula together with part of Finland and Russia ) and Denmark. However, Scandinavian countries are sometimes confused with Nordic countries, and the latter meaning includes Finland and Iceland. The five Nordic countries share close cultural and historical ties and their official cooperation has been framed since 1956 in the Nordic Council, a body dedicated primarily to cultural promotion.
The Scandinavian countries in the strict sense (Norway, Sweden and Denmark) were also the origin of the Viking kingdoms , which attacked and explored most of Europe, Southwest Asia, Africa and Northeast North America between about 789 and 1100 years. . The word Scandinavia derives from Scania, a name used by the ancient Romans to refer to the region that lies in southern Sweden.
In this gallery we have considered landscapes of Scandinavia in the strict sense (Norway, Sweden and Denmark). As we have already mentioned, the Scandinavian peninsula is mostly occupied by Norway and Sweden, and about a quarter of its surface is located above the Arctic Circle. It is the longest peninsula in Europe, with about 1,850 kilometers long and between 370 and 805 km wide.
Due to its extension, the landscape and climate is changing throughout the peninsula, from regions of cold oceanic and oceanic climates in the southernmost parts to the tundra and sub-arctic climates of the north. The landscape includes mountains such as the Scandinavian Alps, tundra, taiga, grasslands, deciduous forests, as well as the famous Norwegian fjords. The peninsula is very sparsely populated, concentrating the largest urban centers in the south, where the climate is more benign, and as a result this region is home to very well-preserved ecosystems and impressive natural areas.
In this gallery we leave you a very small selection of prints and landscapes that can be discovered on a trip to the Scandinavian countries.
