According to a study by Yale University and Columbia University, our country occupies the seventh position in the ranking of those who care most about nature.
To prepare this list, the researchers used what is known as the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) , which is a system that quantifies the environmental performance of a country numerically.
This classification mode measures parameters such as the quality of the air in homes, water, access to drinking water, the environmental protection policies of that country or the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, among many other factors. The top 10 in the ranking are held by Switzerland, Luxembourg, Australia, Singapore, the Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, Austria, Sweden and Norway. In last position, and not surprisingly, is Somalia, the African country mired in conflict and famine for years.
In this edition, 178 countries were taken into account, of which Spain is among the best valued. For example, in water treatment, Spain ranks eighth, and on the issue of carbon dioxide it ranks fourth among the countries that have reduced their emissions the most, something very positive. But not all the points are to be proud of , in fact, some are quite worrying. In certain aspects we obtain a very low failure, for example, on the issue of biodiversity or the protection of marine and terrestrial areas, we go down to position 101 in the table.
In general, it can be said that the country has improved, especially in categories as essential as infant mortality , better access to drinking water or hygiene, areas in which we have managed to improve the score compared to other years , but there is still a long way to go and further improve environmental policies.
