A scientist from the Department of Earth Sciences and Engineering at Imperial College London has found an ancient marine ancestor of lobsters and scorpions and named it Kooteninchela deppi in homage to Johnny Deep , his favorite actor, who played Eduardo Scissorhands. And, as the researcher emphasizes, the species has claws that, due to their appearance and movements, are reminiscent of sharp scissors .
The creature was four centimeters long and lived in shallow seas , similar to the modern coastal areas of British Columbia in Canada, which 505 million years ago were much closer to the equator. The sea temperature at that time was much higher, and this being would have lived with sponges. It had legs similar to those of a millipede , which it used to navigate the sea floor, and had large or jos composed of multiple lenses like those of a fly , located on top of mobile structures called peduncles.
The researcher, who has published his finding in the Journal of Palaentology , suspects that Kooteninchela deppi was likely a hunter or scavenger . Its large scissor-like claws could have been used to capture prey, or have helped probe the seabed for sea creatures that lurk in sediment.
