No wonder: the rainy May was the coldest in eleven years. It can only get better.
Offenbach (dpa) – May 2021 was not only too cool, but also too dark and too wet. This was reported by the German Weather Service (DWD) on Monday in Offenbach after initial evaluations of the results of its around 2000 measuring stations. According to the statistics, it was only the coldest May since 2010.
At 10.7 degrees, the temperature average was 1.4 degrees below the value of the internationally valid reference period 1961 to 1990. Compared to the current and warmer reference period 1991 to 2020, the deviation was even minus 2.4 degrees. May also had a huge temperature range: from minus 4.5 degrees on May 3rd in Meßstetten on the Swabian Alb to 31.3 degrees on May 9th in Waghäusel-Kirrlach near Heidelberg.
After the particularly dry May 2020, May 2021 was particularly wet with around 95 liters per square meter; the mean for the period 1991 to 2020 is 70 liters. At around 165 hours, the sunshine duration in May fell short of its target of 202 hours (comparison period 1961 to 1990) by 18 percent. Compared to 1991 to 2020, the negative deviation was a good 23 percent.
