Scams through WhatsApp known as ‘phishing’ are becoming increasingly fashionable. Technology occupies a very prominent place in our daily lives and scammers know it. This new fraud uses the instant messaging app to promise fictitious gifts in order to get the user’s personal information.
This time, the scam hooks the well-known watch brand Rolex to deceive the user with fake gifts of luxury watches. As reported by the security company Panda Security , the campaign launched through WhatsApp is very similar to the real one of the brand, which makes the user’s confusion even more real.
Luxury gift watches
With the alleged hook of getting luxury Rolex watches, the campaign leaves us a link that directs to a landing page that “clearly uses ‘phishing'” to get hold of the victim’s information, as revealed by Panda Security.
In this campaign, the creators ensure that the brand’s anniversary is being celebrated and that is why they give away their watches. The problem is that neither the brand is celebrating its centenary – it was created in 1905 – nor is the page to which we are directed is real.
According to the data reported by the security company, those responsible for this scam are experts in creating fake websites of this style, since, apparently, all the security certificates on the web are true.
The website directs the user to a form where as much data as possible is obtained, promising that they will win a luxury Rolex once they complete all the data. This is a clear strategy of ‘phishing’ and the authorities already warn that we must be cautious with this type of messages that arrive through WhatsApp since they are very well elaborated and create true lack of protection for the user.
“This is a common strategy among these types of organized hacker groups . Either to promote some application that they have developed with which later to inoculate some type of ‘malware’ in thousands of computers, or to promote some type of apparently legitimate business », explained a few days ago the Global Consumer of Panda Security, Hervé Lambert.
Globally
According to the data provided by the security company, in Spain thousands of users have already been affected, in a copy of ‘phishing’ in Spanish of the original scam that is promoted in English that has already fraudulently obtained data from more than 55,000 people around the world.
