Read more about Paris and Chartres.
Chartres is in the department of Eure-et-Loir (28) in the Loire Valley region. Its most famous sight is the magnificent cathedral that dominates the surrounding countryside. Step inside to see some of the most beautiful stained glass windows in France that are explained in a series of panels. Take a pair of binoculars with you; the windows are high and the stories the windows tell are well worth it.
The city, with its mix of medieval cobbled streets, elegant squares and old buildings, is one of the most popular destinations for visitors to France and particularly for those visiting the Loire Valley. Hotels are booked especially in the high season of July and August, so book early. Summer has its bonuses; Buildings throughout the city are dramatically illuminated. Don’t miss the sound and light show on the west and south sides of the cathedral when the night skies have darkened.
The little train starts and stops next to the cathedral and runs through the city until late at night.
