Heavy storms in Germany caused major damage in the night from Monday to Tuesday. Now the German Weather Service (DWD) warns again of an “extreme” weather situation.
Offenbach – In the night from Monday to Tuesday there were severe storms in some parts of Germany. Heavy thunderstorms, heavy rain and squalls kept the emergency services on their toes until the early hours of the morning. However, the end of the storm is not yet in sight. The German Weather Service (DWD) warns again of “extreme storms” in the course of the afternoon and evening.
Storm in Germany: Heavy rain and squalls cause severe damage
In particular, the southwest of Germany felt the full force of the weather * on Monday evening. Flooded streets, overflowing gullies and landslides resulted in numerous operations by the fire brigade and police in the Calw district in Baden-Württemberg. In Stuttgart, heavy rain and squalls caused various tunnels to fill with water and topple trees. At the State Opera in Stuttgart, parts of the roof cladding were covered * and statues fell from their bases.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Bavaria, too, the storms sometimes led to road closures and flooded cellars. In Lower Franconia, an entire town was even flooded after heavy rain *. A spokeswoman for the DWD said on Tuesday morning that the situation was not yet easing. Although the current storm that formed over Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria has now partially moved to the Czech Republic, the weather situation remains complex. Especially the heavy rain and the squalls are still a problem.
Weather in Germany: DWD warns again of “extreme storms”
This is exactly what the DWD warns of in its current warning report: “Extreme storms and thunderstorms with heavy rain.” After a brief calm, new storms * can occur in some parts of the country in the afternoon. The Saarland, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria are particularly affected. “Local heavy thunderstorms with heavy rain between 25 and 40 l / sqm in a short time, squalls * around 85 km / h (Bft. 9) and hail by 2 cm,” says a preliminary information.
Towards evening, the DWD also believes that a “union into a larger complex” is likely. “It is also not ruled out that a thunderstorm line moving northeastwards will form,” it continues. According to the German Meteorological Service, extremely heavy local rain of up to 60 l / sqm in a short time, as well as gale-force gusts * around 115 km / h (Bft. 11) and larger hailstones can be expected. In the late evening, the thunderstorms * should finally weaken slightly, according to the prognosis. (ph) * Merkur.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA
