KOA San Diego Metro Campground is located in the city of Chula Vista, about 10 miles south of downtown San Diego. It’s in the greater San Diego area, but don’t expect it to be in an urban setting. It is in an area east of San Diego Bay, about 2 kilometers inland from the eastern end of the bay.
Online reviewers have divided opinions about the San Diego KOA. Some people love it and some people hate it. Some of that depends on what they expected. You may want to check the reviews on Yelp and see what people have to say on Tripadvisor before you decide to stay there.
Some people complain about traffic noise and that it is not dark enough at night. Others seem to expect a wild experience in the middle of a city and are disappointed that this camp is devoid of grass and trees.
What facilities are there at KOA San Diego?
The KOA San Diego subway has tents and RVs, as well as furnished cabins.
Your RV sites have full or partial connections. They provide 20, 30 and 50 amp electrical connections. The sites can handle displacements of up to 70 feet. Luxury sites have concrete decks, but others have gravel. Some sites are back-in, but most are pull-through. Most of them can accommodate up to 8 people per site.
They also have KOA camping cabins for up to 6 people, equipped with real bedding and beds. Some of the cabins have private bathrooms and kitchens.
Some tent sites include electrical hookups, but others have no hookups. Their family tent sites have space for up to 12 people. If you would love to camp here in a tent, but don’t have one, or don’t have one with you, you can rent tents at the REI tent in Kearny Mesa.
In addition to all that, the KOA also has some safari-style cabins and canvas cabins with beds, refrigerators, and a camp kitchen.
You’ll get the typical amenities of RV campgrounds at the San Diego KOA: bathrooms with toilets and hot showers, swimming pool, hot tub and sauna, WiFi, a camping tent, cable connections and TV.
For an additional fee, you can rent bicycles. They organize many activities for children. They also host family activities like hayrides on Friday nights and pancake breakfasts on Sunday mornings.
