New Caledonia is reputed to be an expensive tourist destination. However, while this may have been the case in the past, it is now quite possible to have a good time there at a cost comparable to any other South Pacific destination (such as Fiji, the Cook Islands, or Tonga). Of course, if you are staying at a top-notch resort and eat only at the resort restaurants or other restaurants in the tourist areas, then you will pay a higher dollar. However, this is the case everywhere, and even then, you won’t find it noticeably more expensive than comparable places in other countries.
One of the reasons New Caledonia is not so expensive to visit anymore is the exchange rate. Currencies like the New Zealand or Australian dollar are now much stronger against the New Caledonian currency, the Pacific franc.
If you are on a family vacation in New Caledonia, being careful with your budget is even more important. Here are some additional ways to make your money go a lot further and have a memorable time.
Noumea Accommodation and Resorts
Virtually all hotels and tourist resorts in Noumea are located near the coastal areas of Anse Vata and Baie de Citron. Several, like the Royal Tera, have apartments with kitchen facilities so you can save a bit by stocking up on your own.
These resorts have the advantage of being close to the city and the promenade, especially the beaches. This can also reduce transportation costs and time. The Chateau Royal (formerly Royal Tera) and Meridian are right on the beach and the other hotels are across the road.
In addition to hotels, another option is to stay in a privately owned house or apartment (called a ‘hostel’). Many people rent their properties this way. This will be much cheaper, although they will generally be in an urban area and further from the beach. Country houses are also usually available only on a weekly basis and not overnight.
Transport
Local bus service is frequent and inexpensive. If you are with a group, a taxi may be cheaper to split up.
Meals and Meals
Even on the restaurant strip in Anse Vata and Baie de Citron, it is possible to eat for less than NZ $ 10 per person for lunch; each eating place has its menu and prices clearly displayed outside. If you travel a little further, you will find that the restaurants are even cheaper.
However, a great idea is to head to the Noumea market (open until noon every day) or one of the several supermarkets and do your own catering. Grab French bread, cheese, and a bottle of wine (wine is sold in supermarkets) and you will have a meal you will remember.
Activities
There are many things to do that will not cost a fortune. Swimming and sunbathing on the beach is one; Anse Vata and Baie de Citron are very beautiful beaches. Other inexpensive things to do include:
- Visit the museums with a Nature and Culture Pass
- Explore the streets and shops of downtown Noumea.
- Snorkeling day trip with Aquanature to nearby reefs
- Visit the Cathedral of San José.
- Walk to Ouen Toro Lookout for a panoramic view of Noumea and the surrounding sea.
It is actually much easier to plan a quality inexpensive vacation in Noumea than in many other parts of the Pacific. If you’re ready to get a little adventurous and make some of your own meals, you can provide exceptional value as a South Pacific destination.
