Kings Island is one of the most popular regional amusement parks in the country, and for good reason. Highly regarded roller coasters like Diamondback and The Beast, a great collection of kid and family rides, and other features keep turnstile clicking and jamming midway. Their Soak City water park, which is included in your admission price, is also excellent.
However, when the mercury rises on sweaty and busy days, many of the visitors who would otherwise be riding roller coasters are clogging the water park. Soak City offers many great slides and attractions, but the lines and wait times can add up.
Ways to manage lines
So how could you and your group enjoy the strong waves of the wave pool while avoiding the bloated crowds? The general strategy (and this is true for visits to any water park or theme park) is to zag when everyone else is zigzagging. I mean, you don’t want to visit the water park when billions of other people would too. No, for example, arrive in Soak City on a hot Fourth of July and wait sashay until one of the waterslides. There are likely to be wall-to-wall people.
Instead, consider the following suggestions:
- Visit Monday through Friday, especially Monday through Thursday, rather than on the weekends when the crowds are generally lighter. (However, avoid holidays like July 4 and Labor Day, regardless of the day of the week.)
- If you must visit on the weekend, arrive early when Soak City first opens and / or during the last two hours of operation. For half the day, enjoy roller coasters on Kings Island. If the majority of the visitors are in the water park, the lines would probably be less clogged on the “dry” rides.
- Better yet: arrive early or later at the water park on a weekday instead of a weekend day.
- Consider visiting Soak City when it first opens for the season in the spring or towards the end of its operating calendar in late summer.
- If you’re a bit of a foodie, try planning a visit to Soak City when the weather isn’t ideal. Forecasts of lower temperatures, cloudy skies, and / or rain tend to keep visitors away. As a bonus, the crowds for the roller coasters and other Kings Island attractions are probably lower as well. Who knows? You may be lucky and the weather will turn out great despite the forecast.
- If you absolutely have to visit on a hot weekend day or other busy time, you can avoid some of the crowds by buying the skip-the-line program at Kings Island. The regular Fast Lane option, which requires an additional fee, doesn’t work for any of the Soak City rides (nor does it work for some of the more popular roller coasters). You would have to choose the premium Fast Lane Plus, which requires a hefty fee. Please note that you can only skip the lines on select Soak City rides. You would still have to face huge crowds at wave pools, Splash River, and other attractions.
- Rent a cabin. It wouldn’t get you down the slides any faster, but it would at least give you and a few of your park buddies a relaxed place to hang out. Again, it’s not a cheap option, but you wouldn’t have to search for reclining chairs (which are often in short supply on busy days). Plus, you would have your own dining table and place to lock your valuables. And if you’re looking for a premium cabin, you’ll get a mini fridge stocked with soft drinks, a TV, and other amenities.
Why should I even visit Soak City?
There is a reason why the park is often crowded. It’s packed with great attractions like the Tropical Plunge, a slide tower with launch chambers, speed slides, and S-curves.There are also two wave pools, the Pipeline Paradise, a FlowRider surf ride, the family raft ride. Zoom Flume and the Mondo Monsoon funnel ride, as well as water activity areas and play areas for young children.
Other names and identities of the park
Most people have always referred to Soak City as “the water park on Kings Island,” but it actually has several official names. When the park was first opened, it was known as ‘Hydraulic Works’. In 2004, then-owner Paramount Parks renamed it “Crocodile Dundee’s Boomerang Bay” to link it to the film series. With the sale of Kings Island to the Cedar Fair park chain in 2007, the new owners changed the name to simply Boomerang Bay. In 2012, Cedar Fair said “g’day” to the Australian theme and returned to the more generic look and branding of its other Soak City locations.
