From green to pink . Lonar Lake , a saline lake located in Lonar in Maharashtra, India, has changed color. A few days ago, the usual bluish-green hue of this lake turned a reddish-pink color. Why? While more testing is needed to determine the exact cause , experts have suggested that changes in salinity levels and the presence of algae could be responsible.
According to local records, a similar color change was already observed around the year 2000 (although without as much echo in the media as this time), so several water samples have been sent to the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI ) for analysis in order to discover the exact reason for the phenomenon.
The 150 meter deep and 1.8 kilometer wide impact crater is one of the largest in basalt (volcanic) rock anywhere on Earth. Its origin has been attributed to a cosmic impact during the Pleistocene epoch due to the presence of maskelinite, a natural glass that is formed only by extremely high speed collisions.
