The extract of a yellow-flowered plant that grows in mountainous areas such as the Alps and the Pyrenees, and which has been used for years by Scandinavians and Russians as a natural remedy to combat stress, has been shown to be able to extend life around 24%, at least in flies . It is Rhodiola rosea , also known as or o root, and its effects on longevity exceed those of caloric restriction and even those of revesratrol present in red wine.
According to scientists, the most interesting thing is that, in addition to prolonging life, the extract of this plant delays the loss of physical abilities as we age , and is effective even if taken by elderly individuals. Apparently, its effect is explained by reducing the natural production of reactive oxygen molecules, protecting cells from oxidative stress, a state in which free radicals from oxygen cause damage that can lead to cancer and other degenerative diseases.
Scientists are now analyzing whether Rhodiola could be used as an anticancer, to fight Alzheimer's, among other possible applications in human health.
