Wellington – In New Zealand, the situation surrounding the corona demonstrations continues to worsen. Now protesters against vaccination have attacked the police with alleged acid. Demonstrators threw a “stinging substance” at officers during clashes near Parliament in the capital, Wellington, the police reported on Tuesday (February 22, 2022), according to the afp news agency. Three officers had to be hospitalized as a result. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern lamented “absolutely disgraceful” scenes.
The clashes happened as police set up roadblocks. She is trying to seal off a protest camp run by opponents of vaccination. Police Representative Richard Chambers blamed a “certain group within the protest” for the “appalling” alleged acid attack. The three police forces would “recover well” in the hospital. But this “violence and aggression” will not be “tolerated”.

Already on Monday (February 21, 2022) emergency services were thrown at them with faeces during a similar operation. Seven police officers were injured in clashes with the demonstrators. The police announced that they would hold those responsible accountable. Eight people were arrested.

The protests by opponents of compulsory vaccination have been causing unrest in Wellington for two weeks. Numerous people are holding out in a protest camp on the lawns in front of the parliament building. The surrounding roads are blocked by around 900 vehicles. The model for the Corona protests was the so-called freedom convoy of Canadian truck drivers, who paralyzed the capital Ottawa for days.
Prime Minister Ardern said on Tuesday she was concerned the protests were becoming increasingly violent. “The attacks on the police are absolutely shameful,” she said. “I would advise anyone who thinks they are part of a peaceful protest to leave the area.” (slo/afp)
