Air: What components does it contain?

Although it may seem strange, air is made up of many gases, although it is mainly nitrogen and oxygen. It is a combination of these gases that has no color, no smell, or taste , and they make up one of the fundamental parts of life for living beings.

We must be aware that good air quality will greatly affect our quality of life , which is why, increasingly, places away from large cities are necessary to continue breathing pure and clean air.

What is air made of?

The air we breathe is mainly made up of nitrogen and oxygen. But, together with these, in the air we breathe we can find another series of noble gases such as argon, krypton or helium, which end up giving shape to this composition, which is completed with water and carbon dioxide.

All these gases are of vital importance for human life without them we could not survive, so we must fight to keep our air increasingly pure and clean.

Thanks to the air and its composition, we carry out vital functions such as: breathing, photosynthesis for plants or we know fire, wind and clouds.

Air, therefore, is one of the most important elements for life and integrates the group of the four elements of the world together with earth, fire and water.

Gases in the air

Air pollution is increasing on the planet, so we must take care of the Earth’s air as much as we can. Due to this atmospheric pollution, more and more, the air that we usually breathe contains a series of pollutants that put the health of living beings at risk.

Among other pollutants, in the air we find:

Lead: the origin of lead in the air is highly debated since it can come from cells and batteries, even from industrial waste or from tobacco smoke itself.

Arsenic: this toxic substance is usually related to the liberation of humans or the earth’s crust.

Methane: the main sources of methane emissions are fossil fuels and farms. This gas has a greenhouse effect that greatly damages the quality of the air we breathe.

Carbon monoxide: very harmful to health, we find it in the smoke from the combustion of cars, in gas stoves or in heating appliances.

Days were only 17 hours long 2.46 billion years ago

It was when the Moon was much closer to our planet. As the centuries pass, the Moon slowly recedes and the length of our day gradually lengthens accordingly.
