An Italian artist manages to sell an invisible sculpture for 15,000 euros

There are times when reality far exceeds fiction. This week the Italian artist Salvatore Garau has managed to sell his work, baptized as ‘Io sono’, which means ‘I am’ for 15,000 euros. Most surprising of all, it is an invisible sculpture or, as he calls it, “immaterial.” That is, it does not exist, it is not seen, it is only felt. Garau has invented a new concept of art that consists of thinking and believing that there is something in the space where the creation is supposed to be exhibited. The sale of the work has been carried out at the modern art auction house Art-Rite from Milan. The initial price of the invisible sculpture ranged between 6,000 and 9,000 euros, although the award finally ended at 15,000 euros. It is a highly questioned work, which is only represented from the visual point of view in a guarantee certificate that Garau himself has signed and stamped. It is the only object the buyer has obtained. But what exactly is an “immaterial” sculpture? The Italian artist explains that it is only in the minds of people who believe in it and are capable of feeling it. And he recommends placing it in a private home, in a space free of any obstacles and with dimensions of 150 x 150 centimeters. There are those who do not quite understand the work, so Garau relies on science to explain it. He defends that it is not a simple invisible sculpture, but “immaterial”. He has dedicated his entire life to training his fantasy to feel differently what exists around him, and this allows him to “see” what a priori seems not to exist. In a vacuum there is a container of both negative and positive possibilities. In addition, a vacuum is a space full of energy, even if it is emptied of electromagnetic fields, dark matter and neutrinos, among other elements, and only nothing remains, based on Heisenberg’s principle of indeterminacy. Therefore, it has energy that condenses and ends up turning into particles, according to the newspaper ‘ABC’. Garau has received the support of the Italian Institute of Culture. In addition, this week he presented another invisible sculpture titled ‘Aphrodite piange’, ‘Aphrodite cries’, in New York City. White circles have been drawn on the ground to indicate its location.
