At least 100 people were killed in monsoon-related storms in India. The Philippines are also affected.
New Delhi / Manila – Heavy monsoons have killed at least 100 people in western India. The storms had triggered floods and landslides in the past few days, the authorities said.
Houses and bridges have collapsed, streets have been flooded. Numerous residents are still missing.
The state of Maharashtra with its capital Mumbai was particularly hard hit. In the Raigad district alone, at least 49 people were killed by a huge landslide that buried an entire village, said a spokesman for civil protection. At least 35 residents are still missing. The rescue operation is complicated in view of the meter-high mud and the persistent rain.
Floods and landslides in the Philippines too
In the Philippines, around 25,000 people had to leave their homes after heavy monsoons. The heavy rainfall had also caused floods and landslides there, said the civil protection authority. In addition, at least four people were killed in the north of the country as a result of the storm.
Last week, a typhoon had brought heavy rain and squalls of up to 170 kilometers per hour to the north of the Southeast Asian island state and affected thousands of people. The Philippines are hit by around 20 typhoons each year. One of the strongest in recent years was “Haiyan” in November 2013. Around 6300 people died and more than four million lost their homes.
