If this summer you decide to spend your holidays in beautiful Cantabria , you will be able to enjoy spectacular landscapes and a lot of nature, but also beaches that stand out for being one of the best in the northern part of the country. Let’s get to know below, the best beaches in Cantabria to enjoy summer 2021.

Best beaches in Cantabria to enjoy summer 2021

Visiting Cantabria is enjoying one of the best regions we have in Spain as it offers countless activities and places to visit in summer, without also forgetting its gastronomy and those dishes that you cannot fail to try that are typically Cantabrian.

And in case you like to go to the beach , you are in luck because the Cantabrian area has beaches that are truly spectacular. These that we mention below, are the best.

The Sardinero

Santander is our first destination on this holiday in Cantabria in search of its best beaches, where El Sardinero stands out for being perhaps the most popular of all .

Looking east from the center, Sardinero comprises two broad golden strips of silky sand, each about a kilometer long , divided by a perfectly located lookout. There is a promenade full of cafes and bars to stroll, behind which are large architectural remains from the early 20th century, such as the Eurostars Hotel Real and the Gran Casino. Together with Somo (across the bay), Sardinero is Santander’s main surfing territory.

Mataleñas Beach

If you are looking for something calmer, there is nothing like discovering this beautiful 200 m long cove. A small but unique beach, framed deeply between two towering green-clad headlands just north of El Sardinero . The soft, golden sand gives way to crystal clear waters and dreamy views of the sea , although the waves are also used here for surfing (however this is something that happens more in autumn and winter).

The only “but” that can be mentioned about this beach is that from time to time the high tides sometimes swallow the entire stretch of sand , but the nearby beaches of Sardinero and Liencres offer excellent alternatives in case you have such bad luck .

Somo Beach

It would be a shame to visit Santander and miss the fine golden sands of Somo, which disappear into the distance on the other side of the bay beyond El Puntal. It’s a relaxing half-hour ferry ride (€ 4.95 round trip) over the water and once you arrive, the views of the city of Santander and the Magdalena Peninsula become even more divine. Given its easy access, wide expanses, and all kinds of useful amenities in Somo, it is a popular seaside gathering place for many families. More importantly, Somo is also the surf center of Santander. On the other hand, Somo openly looks at the Bay of Biscay, so the currents are strong and you should pay close attention to all the warning flags.

Puntal Beach

A spectacular 2 km long slide of silky, gold-tinged sand, jutting out towards the Magdalena Peninsula from across the bay, El Puntal is another of the best beaches in Cantabria. They are actually two uncrowded beaches separated by a delicate chain of dunes and, depending on the wind and wave conditions, bathers can choose between the often quieter and more sheltered south side, facing the Cubas estuary. or the north side facing the open sea. It is also popular with nudists, but there is plenty of room for everyone.

Langre beaches

At a more than appreciable distance from any urban center, on Cantabria’s Costa Trasmiera , and delimited by a steep cliff, the two untamed beaches of Langre could be classified as the most beautiful in Cantabria. Sometimes popular with nudists, this is a superbly secluded spot, with wooden stairs leading down to fine golden sands lapped by dramatically falling waves and some fabulous surfing too (just watch out for the currents). The smaller and less visited cove of Langre La Pequena is much more protected from the elements, although high tides can often cut both beaches in half. Visit it during the week and you are likely to be lucky enough to enjoy unprecedented tranquility even in summer.
